Howdy all, it's Joachim writing from Hell :)
As you might know I love books and reading plays a big part in my life.
On a regular day, I read three different books. In the morning I read seventeen minutes from a self-motivation book, in the afternoon I read some science book and before sleep I read an autobiography of some awesome person.
At the moment I’m reading the book “Relentless” in the morning, “The order of time” in the afternoon and my nighttime read is the autobiography of Andrew Carnegie. Great stuff!
In the beginning of the pandemic I was introduced to the amazing author Samuel Smiles. He was a Scottish author with some brilliant books on self-help.
His masterpiece called “Self-help” was published in 1859 and the book “Character” followed in 1871. He also wrote biographical books about other amazing people, among them the autobiography of James Nasmyth, a pioneer engineer renowned for his contribution to the discipline of mechanical
engineering.
Several self-help motivators hail Smiles as the creator of self-help and personal development. An example was American inspirational writer Orison Swett Marden, who was inspired by Samuel Smiles as a result of having read Self-Help during his youth.
Smiles promoted thrift and claimed that poverty was caused largely by irresponsible habits.
“Self-respect, self-help, application, industry, integrity—all are of the nature of habits, not beliefs. Principles, in fact, are but the names which we assign to habits; for the principles are words, but the habits are the things themselves.” - Samuel Smiles
