I'm happy to change but...

I've just received an email from my publisher, Rachael, saying she wants to take out all the motivational quotes from the newly revised edition of my book Brilliant Life when it is published later this year.

I start most of my presentations sharing with my audience why they should embrace change, as these days it's a must. That's easy to say - until it becomes personal. I spent days researching those quotes, ensuring I credited the correct source and finding just the right ones for each chapter. In the revised edition I'd gone over every one again, tweaking and tuning - making them better than ever. Then boom! All gone with one stroke of the editor's pen.

I'm aware that in the bigger picture it's nothing. People lost their jobs and found out by text message on the same day. Some poor folk came home to find their partner had left. Yes, in the grand scheme of things it's nothing. But I'm human so it still hurts - a bit.

At times like these I find myself saying (even when I don't feel like it), 'Time to use my own techniques'. So I focused on what I could do. It took about two minutes but when you work on what you can influence and really search for another way, the answer is usually waiting. And there it was, sitting snugly just to the right of my neo-cortex; a better solution. Actually a much better solution.

Rachael was right.  She usually is right, which is why four of my last five books have been international best-sellers.

She's right because she's brave, she embraces change because she knows it will make the final book even better.

She's right because she won't take the easy route and won't put up with petulant authors (not me btw!)

She's right because she cares about the customer and how the book will look and feel to them.

She's right because her customers are not the ego-fuelled authors but the thousands of readers who pick up a book because they want to improve their lives.

Yes folks, change is coming thicker and faster than ever. Time to stop thinking about ourselves and start thinking about the bigger picture. Not all change is good but stubbornly staying the same would be tragic.

Have a Brilliant week!

Michael
