3 days, 2 books, 1 microphone

Published: Thu, 07/19/12

I've recently spent 3 days in a London studio recording the Audio Book version of The Edge: How the Best Get Better. Recording is weird for me because I'm used to presenting from a stage to a room full of people. In the studio it's just me and the microphone.

The mic just looks at you, soulless and static. It doesn't laugh at your jokes, nod to let you know you're on track or give you any indication that you're remotely interesting. It shouldn't be much fun - but it is. I love it!

I've got a playful imaginative mind which serves me well. So well I find it easy to see the listener, iPod in hand, earphones on listening to every word, soaking up the knowledge and planning how they will use it. I'm not recording an audio book I'm chatting with a friend; a smiley, happy, interested friend.

Sometimes when I'm working with organisations that are having challenges with disengaged staff I encourage them to think about the individuals they impact and how what they do improves the quality of their customer's lives.

It doesn't have to be life-changing: An engineer for O2 ensures a girl can wish her boyfriend good luck before an exam.  A bakery assistant prepped the dough, that made the bread, that went in to the tasty sandwich for the tired telecoms engineer. The finance officer who calculated the baker's pay to make sure he had the right tax code. The same finance officer who was delighted to receive a 'good luck' text just before his final accountancy exam.

Who benefits from what you do?
