I've had several people point out to me that even though the last couple of emails were interesting, I haven't explained exactly what The Edge is about. OK, but before I do here's a quick Edge story:
At a conference a couple of years ago I was asked to be part of a panel discussion. Audience members would fire questions and two or three members of the panel would give their responses. One of the panel members was a particularly fierce woman. I'm not sure why but she seemed to be angry about everything. One of the questions was around advice for saving time. I have a real interest in this subject so I was interested to hear what the other panel members would say, especially the fierce lady.
The panel gave the usual mix of doing the important stuff first, having a clear plan and knowing how to delegate; then it was the turn of the angry lady. 'I cut out all the fluff. If it's unnecessary I don't say it or do it.' The chair of the panel asked her for an example, and her reply offered a brilliant example of what not to do.
'If I receive an email I read it on my Blackberry. And if I need it printed I forward it to my PA with the word "Print". I don't have time for anything else. She knows what I mean and when I get back to the office it's on my desk.'
I wasn't sure if I was the only one who found this response interesting, so after the discussion I asked a couple of fellow panel members if they would ever send a one-word email like that. All said the same. They wouldn't. One added, 'I write an email the same way I talk to someone face to face.'
So does the fierce lady have 'The Edge'? She could be seen as successful, strong, powerful even, but does she have The Edge? In the book you'll discover what really gives someone The Edge. You'll also discover my criteria for selecting those - who I believe - have The Edge. I went on to interview many of them so that I could share their ideas.
