How I won £55,000 and changed my life using Flip It

One of the great rewards of doing what we do is hearing about people's experiences and success stories after reading one of our books or attending a presentation. This one really stood out. So much so we'd like to share it with you. This is Zandy Houghton's story.   I first came across Flip It in December 2010. My daughter had bought Flip It and recommended it to me saying it was a 'fantastic read'. It was around the same time that the recruitment company I work for announced a competition for all staff. They wanted us to submit ideas to improve the business, and the winner would receive £50,000! Yes, I am very fortunate to work for an innovative organisation that rewards creative thinking and entrepreneurial spirit. The competition really resonated with me as I often find random ideas popping into my head. In the past I would have asked myself negative questions like, 'Why would my idea be chosen?' However, after reading the section in Flip It on questions, I decided to Flip It and change my question. So instead of doubting my ability I asked, 'How can I come up with a spectacular idea?' HOW CAN I COME UP WITH A SPECTACULAR IDEA? Within hours an idea just popped into my head. I could have submitted it straight away but I spent the days between Christmas and New Year researching the viability of it and planning how I would present it. This was an idea that could make millions and I was excited. I submitted my entry as a one-page document that described my idea in a really positive way. By April 2011 the founder of the business contacted me and said he was so impressed with the idea that he wanted to give me a £5,000 thank you. And he told me I was still eligible for the main prize. December 2011 came and went, without a word about the major prize. I had almost given up but a little voice inside told me to keep the faith with my idea. Fast forward a few weeks to January this year and still nothing, until one day just as I was leaving the office, I got a call. Once again it was the founder of the business, this time congratulating me. My idea had won and I'd been awarded the big prize, a further £50,000! £55,000 FOR MY IDEA It was wonderful to receive £55,000 for my idea but money was never the motivator. I wanted to make a positive impact in the business and on a more personal level, prove I could do it. To be recognised and rewarded by someone whom I have great respect for was important but having faith in myself was priceless. I'm amazed at the power of Flip It thinking. Just asking myself a very simple question caused me to think in a completely different way. Please encourage others to do the same. Now I have put a sentence on my smart phone so every morning when I wake up and switch on my phone it says; 'How can I be brilliant today?'
