Why I'm an active optimist

Published: Wed, 04/03/13

I often talk about the difference between optimists and pessimists during my keynote presentations. Generally audiences agree that being an optimist is best.

Then someone goes and publishes a piece of research that basically says it's better to be a pessimist. Pessimists live longer they say, pessimists have less disappointment, etc.

Here's what the researchers don't look at.  If you just think happy thoughts and happy stuff doesn't happen, the happy (positive) thinker becomes disappointed. It doesn't need Sherlock to work that one out.

THIS is the truth.

Optimism requires action to really make it work.

I don't simply think optimistic thoughts after a sales meeting - I follow up.

I don't hope for a great night out - I book a great table.

I don't wish for great products - I put in hundreds of hours of research, writing and production for every hour I present.

I'm an active optimist!

Optimism is good - Active Optimism is Brilliant!

Be Brilliant!

What Michael says:
Of all my books, Brilliant Life is my absolute favourite. You're comprehensive handbook for a better (even brilliant) life!

I wanted to write a book that you dip in and out of without having to read it from cover to cover; basically I wanted to create a good loo book.

I used to get frustrated when people talked about having a good work/life balance as if one had to be sacrificed to be successful in the other. My argument was you can have brilliance in all areas of life - if you work on it.

Did you know?
Most people never read the whole book, it was designed so you only get the bits you need when you need them.
