Late last year I was delighted that our
book, The Edge - how the best get better, had been shortlisted for the prestigious Management Book of the Year.
The awards ceremony took place at the British Library and of course Christine and I attended.
It was a little bit like the Oscars in that a member of the judging panel read out the shortlist, a golden envelope was opened and a winner was announced.
It differed
from the Oscars in that the nominees didn't receive a $25,000 goodie bag or a trip down the red carpet.
Think jumping out of a cab on a cold, damp, Euston Road and you'll get the picture.
Then it was our turn. The excitement was palpable as the chief judge stepped up to the podium, golden envelope in hand.
Then this happened... As he read the five titles and authors he announced, in true award ceremony style, 'The Edge, how the best get better by Mark
Heppell'.
Mark Heppell! MARK Heppell. Who the heck is Mark bloody Heppell?
Of course I'd practised my 'Delighted I've won face' and my 'Never mind, maybe next year face', but I hadn't practiced my 'Name has been unexpectedly changed face'.
It was at that moment that I realised I probably hadn't won.
Or, if I had won, I was faced with a choice. A trip to the engravers or an application to Deed Poll.
You have to laugh. No really, it's much better than crying in
front of all those serious literary people.
Of course, The Edge is still the same book. And we can proudly say 'Shortlisted in the 2014 Management Book of the Year Awards'. Although I am tempted to say runner-up.
You can get it from all the usual places:
Amazon: Paper Copy, Kindle Version, Audio Book.
And Signed Copies from my website.
And libraries - yes support your local library!
I learned a valuable lesson that night.
It's
cheesy I know but it really IS the taking part that counts.
Having the guts to enter is the hardest part.
That's why I admire any company, individual, group or organisation that moves out of their comfort, steps up and says 'OK judge me'.
Remember: you can only win it if you're in it!
Be
Brilliant!
Mark Heppell
PS I really hope you enjoy receiving my newsletters and postings. We get the odd person who's a bit miffed and accuses me of trying to sell my books, events and training to them.
Yes, that's my job!
But it's not compulsory reading so feel free to unsubscribe (there's a link just below) if you're not getting what you want from them and you'll never hear from me again.
