The biggest difference between an amateur writer and a published author is that all-important word, published.

 

In the past, this meant either paying exorbitant fees to vanity publishers or praying that you'd get a publishing deal.

 

Now anyone can publish a book. It's never been easier.

 

So why do so many wonderful writers have hard drives and notebooks full of their work and still can't call themselves a published author? 

 

Confidence.

 

The confidence to push the button and send your work out into the world.

 

The fear of rejection is intense for most writers. 

 

I've heard all the excuses. 

I'm just waiting for... 

I want to make sure it's absolutely right. 

I'm looking for an agent who is a good fit.

I think the best time would be next June as people are about to go on holiday.

The last one is a classic line for writers who believe WH Smith Travel are falling over themselves to stock their book.

 

Even when you do publish, you must let people know your work is available.

 

Sooner or later, you have to take action.
